Take your community organizing skills to the next level with this advanced 2-day workshop. 

This workshop teaches you advanced community organizing skills, centred on five key leadership practices:  telling stories, building relationships, structuring teams, strategizing, and taking action.

Expected Outcomes

  • Activists feel comfortable adapting their story for different audiences.
  • Understand the principles behind coaching and can demonstrate them in one-on-one practice.
  • Present a story that weaves together the concepts of self, us and now that connect to the organizing statement.
  • Learn the kinds of one on ones, about the kinds of noes, and how to effectively plan for and have the different kinds of one on ones.
  • Learn how theory of change, tactics, and campaign timelines affect each other.
  • See how narrative, relationship building, structure, and mobilizing are linked through strategy to create change.
  • Create a campaign timeline, a series of nested goals, with identified smart tactics, for an organizing project they are working on.
  • Understand how to identify decision-makers and see which communities could turn their resources into the power they need.
  • Able to rank how effective tactics are based whether they increase power and move their team towards a specific strategic goal.
  • Learn how to structure their team in a way that shows the principles of the snowflake model.

About the trainer

Olivia Chow

Olivia Chow leads the Institute’s educational initiatives and has helped train over 5000 activists in political organizing. Olivia has two certificates from the Harvard Kennedy School's Executive Education Program and 9 years of teaching experience. Olivia Chow has also been one of Canada’s most effective and well known public figures. She served 2 terms as a school trustee, 4 terms as a Toronto city councillor and 8 years as a Member of Parliament.
